Kotor’s Institute and “Morsko dobro” Send a Joint Appeal for the Preservation of the Coastline: “Here is an answer to the question of Boka Bay fishermen, who asked about the causes for the disappearance of sardines from the Bay. The answer is - irresponsible relationship to the marine environment on the coastline”, two institutions said in a joint statement on occasion of the Day of the Coast, insisting that the future development of the coastline should be limited with the natural capacity of the coast and the sea.
Budva/Kotor – “We are aware of the fact that the coastal area of Montenegro, which remains the most significant resource for the development of tourism, fisheries, sailing and other economic activities, is subjected to a great pressure.
We find it is crucial to emphasize the importance of the natural resources and environmental stability of these ecosystems, which would allow their rational use”, Institute for Marine Biology and public enterprise “Morsko dobro” noted in their joint statement issued on the international Day of the Coast. This day is marked on 24 October.
With this aim, statement reads, it is necessary to insist that the future development of the coastline should be limited with the natural capacity of the coast and the sea. It is also important to provide separate analysis on the impact which the realization of these projects would have to the environment, “as it is beyond doubt that man and his activities - on such a small portion of coastline - inflict damage to the harmony and balance which has existed in nature for thousands of years.”
“Pollution of the sea from the coast and the ships; aggressive in the coastal area; unplanned covering of beaches, which destroys their natural configuration, as well as the destruction of vegetation and biodiversity, inflicts greatest damage precisely to this small surface of contact between sea and land, where intense physiological processes, which are crucial for entire living organisms at sea, take place.
Here is an answer to the question of Boka Bay fishermen, who asked about the causes for the disappearance of sardines from the Bay. The answer is - irresponsible relationship of humans to the marine environment and the coastline.
And, while the fish and the other organisms can change their habitat when they find negative impacts are jeopardizing their survival, it is up to us to make sure that the coast and the sea are preserved in the manner acceptable for everyone who lives there.
And, for this reason, only the development which would be based on the responsible relationship to all the natural resources present in this area, can bring back the harmony between the nature and man on the Montenegrin coast”, statement reads.
Blue Cradle of Life
For the occasion of the Day of the Coast, Institute for Marine Biology and “Morsko dobro” have jointly published educational and promotional poster “Marine Life of the Adriatic Sea”. This poster will be made available to schools and other interested organizations in the coast towns.
Lectures entitled “Importance of the Sea and the Coastal Area” will take place in schools. All the participants of last year’s painting competition – “The Coast Which I Want to Have” – will be awarded the promotional T-shirts, bearing the symbol of the Day of the Coast.
“With these activities, we wish to promote the importance of marine life protection and the protection of the coastal area and point out our particular responsibility in preserving the ‘blue cradle of life’”, statement concludes.
