Research Reveals New Data for Boka Bay: The most recent research conducted in Boka Bay has revealed the maximum depth of the Bay is 64 meters, although existing maps suggested it was 45 meters. This location, which is situated SE from Perast has not yet been noted on the nautical charts, neither has the system of eight underwater wells, in which there is absolute lack of oxygen, it has been stated from the Institute for Marine Biology. This research project has been implemented by “ADRISCOM ADRIA.”
“During the period between 19 and 25 October, an oceanographic research has been completed, a part of scientific project ADRICOSM STAR. This project has been implemented in the area of Southern Adriatic and Boka Bay.
Research has been conducted with the use of the biggest Italian scientific vessel “Urania”, which is equipped with rather expensive and sophisticated devices for sampling and analysis of water samples and sediments and capable to deliver various information about the state of the environment.
Sonde “Satlantic”, for the measurement of concentration chlorophyll has also been used. In combination with satellite pictures, we now have a clearer picture about the production of plankton in this area.
Research of depths has also been conducted, as well as profile of relief and sediments, with the assistance of multi-beam acoustic sonar.
“Area containing underwater well is one of the rare specificities of Kotor’s Bay and it should be placed under protection as a special environmental zone, together with Strait of Verige. This area should not at all be influenced by man. This research will continue with the analysis of samples. Results will be made public at the beginning of February”, statement, signed by Institute’s Senior Scientific Advisor, Dr Zoran Kljajic concludes.
