Project of the US Embassy and the Municipality of Pljevlja
Pljevlja – By symbolic ribbon-cutting, the American Ambassador to Montenegro, Roderick Moore, and the Mayor of Pljevlja Dr Filip Vukovic opened American Corner in the Sport Center „Ada“ yesterday.
The project is a result of cooperation of the Municipality of Pljevlja and the US Embassy in Podgorica, and this is the second American corner in Montenegro. The same institution in Podgorica has existed since 2003.
The US Embassy financed the purchase of furniture, equipment and materials, as well as staff training, with USD 50.000, while the Municipality provided the space and hired staff which will be working in the American Corner.
Visitors will have access to collections of American books, magazines, CD-ROMs, music and films.
American Corner is equipped with computers which have Internet access and databases on United States of America, and it will host various programs such as exhibitions, lectures, seminars and presentations.
Moore said that American Corner has been opened so that citizens of Pljevlja and other municipalities in the North could learn more about them.
- We are here to learn something from you, as well. America, which was founded by immigrants, is well-aware that many things could be learned from people all around the world. I hope that this corner will be excellent foundation for many exchanges between our countries – said the American Ambassador.
Priority of the US Embassy is to give support to citizens from the north of Montenegro in building a better future.
- There is a huge unused potential in this region and we have started the project „Stars“ which is going to provide additional funds for small and medium enterprises in the north with the aim to improve their businesses and secure position on larger markets – said Moore and added that implementation of this project will cost at least USD 10 mn.
Vukovic stated that Pljevlja can be proud of having this type of education center.
- I believe that privilege to be the second town in the country to have this center is well-deserved due to our rich history, tradition and culture based on harmony, coexistence and tolerance among people of different religion and nationality – said Vukovic.
He emphasized that citizens of Pljevlja as well as guests will be able to learn more about American culture, science and society, and to improve pronunciation of English language.
At the same time, this will be the corner where young people are going to improve their knowledge, and place where future students who wish to study in USA will have chance to get the information on continuing their education in this country.
The Mayor said that opening of the American Corner is yet another proof of support which American people provide for the citizens of Pljevlja and reminded that USA through USAID and CHF helped in building the infrastructure and development of small and medium-sized enterprises.
- Reconstruction of the Shadrvan (fountain) in the Huseyin Pasha Mosque was financed from the Ambassador’s Fund for Protection of Cultural Heritage – reminded Vukovic.
