Press conference on the occasion of the forthcoming Theatre City: The Manager of “Multimedia Group”, Marko Kentera, assessed that this year’s programme would be a real breakthrough when compared to earlier editions. ‘Unlike before, we decided to do a major project. We are determined to change the practice of “Tales from Budva” and put together one world-class theatre play, which is to be the first production over a three-year period’

Budva – The Theatre City Budva (Grad Teatar Budva) will, after all, take place this year. Once its financial claims were settled, the agency “Multimedia Group”, which is in charge of drama programme of the festival, announced that this year’s programme will be somewhat modest but yet prestigious with one festival production as its backbone.

In order to maintain a distinctive trait of the festival – expensive and glamorous performances – the Management Board will decide within the next seven days whether their own production of Othello or Odyssey will be carried out or they will do a joint production of the theatre play “Rasprava” (The Dispute) of the well-known European director Alexander di Mar.

This year’s festival is going to last 40 days and the opening ceremony will take place on 10th of June with the premiere performance in front of walls of the Old Town.

The Executive Manager, Merlin Smailagic, said that the festival kept its four thematic units: dramatic, musical, literary and visual art unit.

- The musical programme, unlike previous festivals when we were holding on to specific epochs, will be more diversified this year. Therefore, several different musical genres will be represented. As far as visual arts programme is concerned, we will be returning to some traditional forms, and thus three exhibitions will be organized during the festival – Smailagic informed at yesterday’s press conference and announced two projects in cooperation with EU and the Polish Embassy.

The Manager of “Multimedia Group”, Marko Kentera, assessed that this year’s programme would be a real breakthrough when compared to earlier editions.
- Unlike before, we decided to do a major project. We are determined to change the practice of “Tales from Budva” (Budvanske price) and put together one theatre play on a global scale, which would be the first production in three years. In case we do our own production, there will be “Othello” or “Odyssey”, or we will make the play “Dispute” in co-production with the Yugoslav Drama Theatre (JDP). These are sweet torments, since both of the plays will be excellent and attract large audiences. Moreover, this year’s festival will be marked by street spectacles and the best theatrical projects from the region. We will host again German theatre “Titanic” with its project “Odyssey” which will be performed in front of the Old Town. We will host the Spanish theatre “Pujo” with the play “Dudulend” this year as well as troupes from France, Canada and Australia – Kentera announced.

According to him, the dramatic unit of the festival includes the play “Dervis i Smrt” directed by Egon Savin from the regional theatre, and “Metastaza”, a play from Croatia, while audience in Budva will be given a chance to see again plays “Don Krsto” and “Skocidjevojka”.

A person in charge of selection of the literary program, Svetlana Ivanovic, emphasizes that this year, the Poets’ Square (Trg pjesnika) will cherish the concept of presenting only the best from former Serbo-Croatian speaking countries.

She announced this year’s winner of NIN literary award Vladimir Pistalo as honorary guest-star.
