Visit-Montenegro.com: Brushes all set for Herceg Novi

Refurbishing facades in the largest city in Boka: A lot of tourists and local citizens had objections to non-urban appearance of the central area of Herceg Novi, where luxury banks and shops are predominant on one side, and on the other there are facades and sections which look like they were a set of some social-realist film. Local government is willing to provide both financial and expert support in implementing projects that make the city look more attractive.

(June 30, 2009) Herceg Novi – Many tourists and local citizens had objections to non-urban appearance of the central area of Herceg Novi where luxury banks and shops are predominant on one side, and on the other there are facades and sections which look like they were a set of some social-realism film.

The best example to underpin the story is ruins of an old hotel “Rudnik” in the most exclusive part downtown Herceg Novi. Over the last year, the need for change has been clearly defined, primarily owing to the project “Urban movables and visual communication in areas “Zapadno podgradje” (western suburbs), the square and Njegos Street in Herceg Novi” which is carried out by NGO “Expeditio” from Kotor and the Agency for Construction and Development of Herceg Novi.

“Façade refurbishment of the former shopping mall “Mjesovito” in the center of Herceg Novi laid the first stone in bringing back the city center its urban looks” – said Slobodan Popovic, Manager of the Agency for Construction and Development of Herceg Novi.

He raises hopes that this will encourage other proprietors in Zapadno podgradje and Njegos Street to do the same. Moreover, the local government is willing to provide both financial and expert support in implementing this kind of projects.

Works on restoring façade surface of one of the oldest buildings in the city- the foundation of Leso Pavkovic- should be over by 1st July when municipal ban on performing construction works becomes effective.

Apart from new colour, the edifice will get hydro-isolation installed and stonework cleaned. It will be fitted with renewed woodwork and it will have lamp posts in front. The entire investment takes EUR 1.900. Half of this amount will be paid by trading company “Novito” or “Mjesovito”, which owns this object, and the other half will pay the Agency. Façade paints were donated by the company “Jotun boje.”

Popovic reported that they agreed further cooperation with the company “Novito” on refurbishing façades on several more objects in the city, for instance, the building in Njegos Street which was designed by renowned architect Milan Tapavica.

In accordance with the plans, façade repair of the archive building on square Belavista in the old town will be performed soon.
