PODGORICA - NATURE

Podgorica is situated in the south part of the north mild zone, on the touch of the Mediterranean continental climate. Opened towards the sub tropic climate zone Montenegro is dominated by the mild Adriatic sub tropic climate. Located on the biggest Montenegrin plain it is situated on the composition of the three rivers: Moraca, Ribnica, and Zeta. Sudden urbanization of towns in the XX century made that the big and modern settlements are formed exactly in this type of geographic space, which allows a good connection with other towns and has the conditions for the agricultural and industrial production in the immediate surrounding.

The view towards the south west leads to Lovcen on whose peak we have the mausoleum on the biggest height above the sea level in the world. Towards the south we have Sozina and Rummija, rich Skadar Lake and Mediterranean sun, on the east bare peaks of Prokletije covered with ice and snow for the most part of the year. Whirlpools and rapids of Moraca through the narrow sides of Platije, of height even up to 1.000m, connect Podgorica, with a narrow passing through, with the north. Towards the west there is the valley of Zeta and the famous history. Around Podgorica, the wreathe of mountains and history closes the circle in which the old civilizations – Greek, Byzantium, Celtic, Illyrian, Roman, Turkish and Slovenian, have fought for land and for better life.

Podgorica today is the town with about 170.000 citizens who live on the surface of 1.441 km2, on averagely 44m of height above the sea level. Podgorica thanks to this kind of geographic position has grown into a capital city, with political, administrative, and economic weight. On 65 kilometers from the sea and equally distant from the winter tourist centers Podgorica really has an amazing possibility of turning into a transit center of international character.

The climate is Mediterranean; summers are dry, long and extremely warm, and the winters are mild, with often rainfalls. Te average yearly temperature is 16, 4 Cº with over 260 days without rainfalls. In the summer the temperatures reach the 40 degree. It is interesting that for the determination of the border between the sub tropic and moderate zone the best indicator is the olive tree. It can bear fruits exclusively in the places where the average January temperature is not lower than 6 Cº. Podgorica has the temperature only one degree lower and the olive can not bring a quality fruit. The snow in Podgorica is a really rare event and it somewhat represents attraction, bringing the joy to the youngest citizens. The rain showers are characteristic for the spring, and the longer rain periods are characteristic for the late fall. Summer can pass for even 100 days without a rainfall in the capital city.

As it can be seen, Adriatic Sea has a large influence on the climate of Podgorica. Through the valley, over Skadar Lake, with the influence of the surrounding mountains, Podgorica is defined as altered Mediterranean. The average yearly amount of rainfalls is 1544mm, and the relative humidity of air is 59, 6%. The number of rainy days is about 115, and those with the strong wind around 60. A special influence on climate of Podgorica has a periodical strong, north wind, which influenced the subjective experience of the temperature, making it a few degrees lower. Over 135 days in a year the air temperature is above 25 Cº. All those characteristics make Podgorica an area with a suitable climate.

Podgorica is located in the greatest plain area of Montenegro, as a part of the spacious Skadar – Podgorica valley. It is mildly leaned towards the south and south west. The south part of the Zeta plain, under the name of Lower Zeta, continues towards the Skadar Lake as a floodable and swamped land. This is extremely fertile part of the plain with deposited particles which make a thick layer of the cultivable land, suitable for the vegetable cultures, such as pepper and tomato, as well as for vine growing and fruit growing – especially for the raising peaches, figs, and kiwi. In the middle part of the Zeta plain in the triangle between Cijevna, Ribnica and Moraca lies the spacious Cemovsko field, built from the layers of pebble and sand, which is tied with carbonate cement. On this field the layer of cultivable land never managed to form. With special agro technique hundreds of ha of Cemovsko field was won and turned into vineyards with high quality of fruit and later production of quality wines and alcoholic beverages. Towards the west Podgorica opens itself towards the Bjelopavlici plain, in which we have river Zeta and which is pedologically and with its climate extremely favorable for cultivation and fruit growing.

The town itself is known by the spacious and nicely arranged green areas and parks. Some are dominated by the pine trees, and some by lead falling trees such as linden, oak, and plane tree. In the recent years Podgorica has wide boulevards which are decorated with the attractive trees – palms. Along the main traffic arteries of the city one can find the bushy growth such as box.

Zeta plain in which the town is located is the area with 30.000 ha of fertile land and it spreads from Glava Zeta (HEAD OF ZETA) to the coasts of Skadar Lake.

River Moraca is relatively rich with fish which can be confirmed by the often view of the fisherman on the banks of the river even in the very city. An interested visitor of the town can address to the Sport fisherman association of Podgorica for the necessary permits and precious advices, which devotees of this sport can give you, and they are concerned with fishing places, ear and what is most important, socializing.

So, rivers are the source of life of Podgorica. Moraca, Ribnica, Zeta. Sitinica, Mareza, and Cijevna for ever have determined the boundaries of the town, but also a great number of underground waters make this area extremely rich with healthy drinking water. Lime riverbeds and exquisite relief which waters of Podgorica have sculptured, beside the practical one, give Podgorica and aesthetical – ecological appearance.

Pogorica is made of several areas characteristic by its geography. In the area of Kuci and Piperi, agricultural production and cattle breeding dominate over the growth of fruit kinds, while mountain potato in this area grow very well. Here also you can find fishponds in which an exquisite trout is being raised. In the zone of Ljeskopolje and Komani, with somewhat milder climate, in the recent years vineyards are growing and the plants of various fruit kinds. In the south of the municipality of Podgorica, in Zeta area the farmer style of cattle breeding is being developed, and in Malesija especially developed is the cultivation of tobacco.
