TIVAT - CULTURE
As an urban lodgment, Tivat began to develop and to take on the features of the Mediterranean town at the end of the XIX century. Because of that fact its historical and especially cultural development cannot be observed separately from the cultural development of entire Boka Kotorska.
Considering the fact that there is no sufficient information about the actors that immediately influenced the development of the culture in Tivat, it cannot be spoken with precision about what personalities have dominated in the epochs that are thought to be very important for the development of Tivat in general.
The number of archive documents and certificates about the personalities that were meritorious for the cultural development is very little. In the earliest period of the development of Tivat in 167. – 8. year B.C. an important personality was the Queen Teuta. Teuta is an Illyrian queen, whose reign remained remembered by the governance of the ancient town in Boka Kotorska, Risan. Even though there are no detailed written tracks, the thing for which Teuta`s is significant, and by which today Tivat is being recognized are numerous summer cottages which she built on the wider area of the town Tivat.
The chroniclers note, that in the past too along the shore there were “kontije” (buildings for noblemen), which were more than one kilometer apart from each other. The “kontije”, whose remains of the buildings exist even today, belonged exclusively, to the richest Kotor, Prcanj and Stoliv noblemen, who used them for vacation and as hunting places.
The stated facts, serve to chroniclers to support the justification of the naming of Tivat by the name Teodo or divine town.
Even though in the area of Tivat a great number of the remains of the early Christian temples from the IV century were found, from that period until the year 1219., when in the surrounding of Tivat the first Orthodox episcopacy (Zeta episcopacy) was enthroned, there almost do not exist details about personalities who contributed the cultural development of the town.
Still, the period from IX till XIV century, that is the year 1219. is important for the historical and cultural development of Tivat, because in that year on the peninsula Prevlaka (Coating), better known by the name Ostrvo cvijeca (The Island of flowers), appears Sveti Sava and on the remains of the benediction temple he builds a monastery.
The next person who had indirect connection with Tivat is emperor Dusan. During the period of his reign (1308. – 1355.), his closest associates were respected Catholics – tradesmen, landowners and bishops from the wider area of Boka Kotorska. His connections with Mihailo and Nikola Buco the landowners who besides in Kotor had palaces and summer cottages in Tivat were the most famous ones. Historians write, that Nikola Buco on Dusan`s court, stayed as a very important persona. Kotor`s landowners and nobility have built the facilities for vacation and pleasure on the wider territory of Boka: in Dobrota, Risan, Prcanj, and many other places…
Except the family Buco, family Drago is also interesting. That family also owned numerous palaces in Boka. Besides them the names of families: Bualica, Beric, Srdjic, Bivolic are also mentioned, but for Tivat the most famous noble family is the family Lukovic, on whose ground today we can find a part of the Great Tivat town park, as well as the family Radali. Even though there are no archeological proofs of the direct influence and creation of the sacral monuments on the territory of the today’s Tivat, for Boka Kotorska, a very important person is a church and a temple constructor, Vito Kotoranin (Vito from Kotor). The cognition about him came in 1326. Without any detailed data, there still exists a doubt that Vito Kotoranin, along with several other exquisite stonemasons and bricklayers, created some of the Tivat`s monuments of culture (palaces, churches).
In the same period the name of Marin Bolina is mentioned. A landowner who had his own vineyards near Tivat, more precisely near today’s Ostrvo cvijeca.
For Ostrvo cvijeca, the name of the historically important personality – Countess Ekatarina Vlastelinovic is connected. In the XIX century she bought the south part of the mentioned island. On the island she built a church of Sveta Trojica (St. Trinity) and as a nun she spent her widow’s life. Ekaterina was the daughter of the famous Zadar poet Jovan Sundecic, a personal secretary of the Montenegrin Prince Nikola. Ekatarina`s brother Spiridon Sundecic, was the archimandrite of the Monastery Savina near Herceg Novi. The great wealth, which Ekatarina partly got by marrying for the famous Risan nobleman Ilija Vlastelinovic, Countess invested in the renewal of the sacral monuments on Ostrvo cvijeca (The Island of flowers). Ekaterina Vlastelinovic did mysteriously in 1842., and according to some sources, the great wealth and the gained property she bequeathed to Petar II Petrovic Njegos, with whom during her life she was in frequent contacts. The shrine on Ostrvo cvijeca, according to the historical data was once more sold at the end of the XIX century to the archimandrite Nicifor Ducic, who continued to live there.
The area of Boka Kotorska, and Tivat also during the XIX and XX century was visited by Vuk Vrcevic, originally from Grbalj (Boka Kotorska) 1811. – 1882., the collector of folk literature, then Stefan Mitrov Ljubisa (1824. – 1878.) – the writer and the national tribune from Pastrovici (Budva), then by the famous Serbian writer Vuk Stefanovic Karadzic (1787. – 1864.), Montenegrin bishop and poet Petar II Petrovic Njegos (1813. – 1851.). Also the names of the famous writers, chroniclers, and poets like: Ljubomir Nenadovic (1826 - 1895), Simo Matavulj), Milan Jovanovic Morski (1834 – 1896), Aleksa Santic (1864 -1924), bishop Nikolaj Velimirovic (1880 – 1958), Milos Crnjanski (1893 – 1977), are also mentioned.
Historical data say that the writer and the poet, the creator of the Serbian language Vuk Stefanovic Karadzic, stayed near Tivat, on Ostrvo cvijeca (The Island of flowers), for the first time in 1836., when he was visiting the old churches all over Boka.
Two years later in that area stays also the famous Russian painter –the creator of documentary films Fedor Karascau. During the second visit of Vuk Karadzic to Ostrvo cvijeca (The Island of flowers) in 1841., the famous Russian Slaves Nedazdin Sreznjavski, Prajs and Knazevic come to Tivat. That year Vuk Stefanovic Karadzic begins to receive famous letters from Boka, whose author was the priest Vuk Popovic (from Grbalj).
Between two world wars, for the area of Boka and Tivat the names of Petar Sarovic, a great researcher of the past of Boka, and Nikola Juric, a priest, later a politician are important. In the more recent time at the end of the XX century, Tivat is more famous by the musicians. In Tivat lives Maja Perfiljeva, a famous ex – Yu text writer. Among young forces, the names of the female singers of pop music like Edita Slabi – Brkan and Nina Petkovic are mentioned. Also, a significant person in Tivat is the director of the Cultural Center Tivat – Milena Radojevic.
