TIVAT - NATURE

Tivat is situated in the central part of Boka Kotorska. From the north it is protected by the Mountain Lovcen (1749 m) and Lovcen`s spur Vrmac (710 m). Tivat bay through gorge Verige is connected with Risan and Kotor bay. Tivat, whose total surface is 49 km2 is considered to be the most wide spread lodgment in Boka Kotorska.

Tivat is characterized by the typically Mediterranean climate, with mild, rainy winters and clear and warm summers. The average year temperature of air is 15C0. In Tivat averagely there are 115 days a year with the temperature above 30C0. Tivat is considered to be the sunniest town of Boka Kotorska, with averagely 240 sunny days per year. The summer temperature averagely is 27C0. Swimming season lasts for 180 days.
The sea in Tivat has dark blue color. The salinity is 28%. The height of the waves is 0,5 m, while the waves over 2 m are very rare.
Yearly in Tivat there is over 1.755 mm rainfall. The town Tivat is famous for various winds also.

During the winter, in Tivat, blows the tempest (the north wind), and during the summer the minstrel (west wind). In the fall or in the winter often blows south wind which usually brings the rain. The climate conditions which are characteristic for the are in which Tivat is situated, give ideal conditions for a successful growth of many exotic plant which can be found in the far famous Tivat`s green park, where even today some specimens of the herbs, which sailors brought from all over the world, are being grown.

The archeological researches point out that the area of Tivat is very cultivated, with an ideal climate. In Tivat there used to be salt plantations – various salt works and small sections of clay brick of very high quality. Because of the geographic position and the fact that the salt used to represent a strategic food grocery, Tivat through the centuries was a target of numerous conquerors.
Tivat bay, as well as Tivat aquatorium is very rich with fish. In the sea in Tivat live a great number of very different species of fishes and other inhabitants of the sea depths. Most frequently in Tivat bay you can see: sea perch (dicentrachus labrax), dentex (dentex dentex), san pjer (zeus faber), gilthead (sparus aurata), red porgy (pargus pargus), surmullet (mullus barbatus), sirun (trachurus mediterraneo), sardelle (sardin pilchardus)... etc. Also lobsters, octopuses, squids, European cuttlefish, shells and other kinds of mollusks inhabit Tivat bay.

When we are talking about fishes and richness of the under water world, on the Montenegrin coast, and also in Tivat, there are conditions for all kinds of fishing. For the fishermen, or for those who wish to practice fishing as a hobby, there are numerous places where for e.g. you can fish from the shore, from the barge, from paddle boat, or where they can throw nets… If you come across the older and more experienced fishermen, you will often hear, and if you are interested enough you will learn, how to fish in the night under a lantern or as they say how to make bait for the fish.

The fauna of Tivat is also diverse. In the surrounding hills like: Krtola, Vrmac etc often you can meet: weasels, rabbits, stags, wolfs, foxes, squirrels etc…
As in the past on the green slopes of the hills that surround Tivat, as well as in their foothills, a great number of various birds lived, even today it is possible to come across some species and hear their song. Today those are: gulls that live in the areas close to the sea, as well as the swallows. Sparrows, robins, larks, falcons, eagles and many other birds inhabit the surrounding hills.

Still, Tivat is like many other coastal towns much better known by the thick vegetation. Everything that goes into the description of the flora in Tivat, is connected to its parks. The most famous is the Big city park, which is considered to be the greatest botanic garden in the south Adriatic. The size of the park is 4 ha and it was built in 1892. year. In the park the specimen of rare plants like: Chilean fir, various kinds of arises, cedars, Italian stone pines, palms, magnolias, and other exotic and very attractive trees and growth, are being grown.

Also, the gardens of numerous Tivat households are decorated by flower parks and topiaries in which you can see mimosas, bogomil, jasmines, black locust, oleanders… as well as other decorative growth, shrubs and bushes.
