Montenegro Independence

Montenegro Coat of ArmsMontenegro is one of the oldest states in Europe, and in the past 10 centuries it went through various forms of independent existence and alliances with other Balkan nations and states.

The first Montenegrin state arouses as a mixture of Slav, Illyrian, Avar and Roman tribes as a half independent state Duklja in the X century. In 1077. year pope Grgur VII acknowledges King Mihailo as Rex Docleae (King of Duklja), and with that acknowledges Duklja as an independent state. At that time Duklja was submitted to Byzantine and Bulgarian kingdom, and that was the main obstacle for its independence. What is significant to point out is that the head of the tribal state Stefan Nemanja, the founder of Serbian dynasty Nemanjic was born in Duklja.

What is of great importance for the present Montenegro is the creation of the state of Zeta, in 1360. The Turks never managed to conquer Zeta, and Balsici reined with it from 1360. to 1421. After Balsici Zeta was reined by Crnojevici from 1421. to 1499.

In 1526. Prince Djuradj Crnojevic abdicated in benefit of the archbishop Vavilo who made Montenegro a theocratic state at that moment. Since 1697. Montenegro was reined by people from the family Petrovic Njegos. In 1851 Danilo Petrovic Njegos becomes the ruler of Montenegro, and in 1852 he leaves the clergy and takes up the title of Prince, turning with that the state from theocratic into a secular.

Under the reign of Nikola Petrovic, since 1878. Montenegro de facto is acknowledged as a state, and its boundaries were broadened. Montenegro took part in Balkan wars (as one of the leading forces), fighting for the independence of all south Slav nations.

With London conference Skoddar belonged to Albania even though Crnojevici were the ones who liberated it from the Turks.

In the World War I Montenegro was occupied by the Austro – Hungarian troupes and they imposed Montenegro a military governor as an administrator of Montenegro.

In 1918 . at Podgorica Parliament people voted for unison of Montenegro with the Kingdom of Serbia, and that unison went in the direction of creation of Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenians. Pro independent Montenegrins rioted on Christmas in 1919., but that riot was immediately crushed.

In 1929. Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenians was renamed into Kingdom of Yugoslavia. From 1941. to 1945. Montenegro as a part of Kingdom of Yugoslavia actively participated in the fights of Yugoslavian troupes for liberation from fascism. From 1945. to 1992. Montenegro is a part of SFRJ (Socialistic Federation Republic of Yugoslavia) and was one of the 6 republics members of the state (Serbia, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro).

In 1992 there was a referendum held on which it was decided that after the collapse of the former Yugoslavia, Montenegro and Serbia will join in SRJ (Socialistic Republic of Yugoslavia). On the 27th of March the new state was proclaimed.

Already from 1996. one current is inclined towards the independence of Montenegro, especially creating the independent economic policy and turning to new political centers. In 2003. the state was renamed into Serbia and Montenegro, and became a much looser union, with the fact that there was a moratorium that referendum can not be conducted until the period of three years expires, and in that way the question of independence was left on hold.

The question of the status of the relations of Serbia and Montenegro was solved by the referendum on the 21st of May 2006. The repost was 86. 5%, which the biggest repost ever in the history of Montenegro, and with 55, 5% of votes Montenegro voted its independence.

Hundreds of supporters of independence and sovereignty of Montenegro already in Sunday evening started celebrating on the streets of Podgorica, with the already prepared fireworks and with the fluttering of flags. The celebration lasted until early morning hours.

Serbia, members of the EU, and the members of the Security Council have acknowledged Montenegro as an independent state. On the 3rd of June 2006 Montenegrin Parliament has formally issued the declaration of independence, officially admitting the results of the referendum.

On the 8th of June Island was the first state, which acknowledged the independence of Montenegro. On the 28th of June, same year Montenegro became the 192nd member of the United Nations.

That night www.visit-montenegro.com as always was with you, broadcasting the historical events on our site LIVE, and only that night the site had more than 50.000 visits which simply testifies about that fact that www.visit-montenegro.com is the door on which the majority of Europeans and foreigners enters Montenegro. Thanks to our site Montenegrins outside Montenegro too could immediately be informed about the outcome of the referendum and they could share their joy with their countrymen.

Montenegro now as an independent sate is trying to be one of the states with the most liberal regime of movement of people, that is, the entrance of people in Montenegro, and free movement of its citizens, investment and gaining property, trading and turnover of goods, exchange of knowledge, ideas and expertise. Montenegro has greatest resources for the development of the country in its unique beauties, favorable geographic position, and sea on one side and mountains on the other, mineral resources, but we should not also forget to point out the human resources, because we are all familiar that the great number of Montenegrin men and women have great success outside the borders of Montenegro and they have proved themselves as great experts in various disciplines.
