The road, which was built in XIX century, intersected the south part of east city bulwarks between two towers.
Herceg Novi – During the reconstruction of water system in the Street of Sava Kovacevic, near “Tonsati” in Herceg Novi, the workers of the firm “CMC” had dug up a part of the old wall. It was made of pre-hewed stone, which is connected with white lime plaster. The discovered part of the stone belongs to the city nucleus and at one point it was damaged and it got covered during the construction of the road – it was said from the Hometown museum and artistic gallery “Josip Beno Benkovic”. The road, which was built in XIX century, intersected a part of east city bulwarks, between two towers.
On that part of the bulwarks there is a range of four polygonal towers, which exist on engravings from the time of Venetian conquering of Herceg Novu from the Turks in 1687. However the time of appearance of those constructions in not known – it is said from the Museum.
The discovered part of the wall stretches towards the city bulwarks and it was probably attached for the southeast tower.
At the end of March, the team of the regional bureau for protection of monuments of culture from Kotor discovered, nearby, a part of the old city bulwark, working on an archeological examination on the complex of Mark the Emperor in Herceg Novi’s Old town. It is a defensive bulwark with wide grounds of 2,5 meters.
City bulwarks of Herceg Novi’s Old town are about a kilometer long and in one part they go through the yards of private houses which very often lean on it.
The remains of the wall, according to the testimony of the owner Silvo Tonsati, are found also bellow his house, nearby.
After the earthquake in 1979 it was planned that the city bulwarks will be renewed, but the money intended for that purpose was re-directed somewhere else.
