Two week consulting practicum, organized mutually by Ministry of tourism of the Republic of Montenegro, office of Program of United nations for development (UNDP) at Podgorica and American University George Washington, will take place from 10 to 25 June 2006, with aim to valuate possibility of undertaking tourism in nature in region of National park Durmitor with municipalities Zabljak, Savnik, Pluzine and Pljevlja.
As part of official program of World tourist organization, this consulting project will include team of 16 post graduates of University George Washington under leadership of Ph.D. Donald Hokins, Milena Nikolova and Ph.D. Hana Meserly, as well as 8 Montenegrin students from Faculty for tourism and hotel management at Kotor under leadership of Andriela Vitic and Faculty for tourism, hotel management and commerce at Bar lead by Sanja Vlahovic.
This consulting team will in cooperation with Montenegrin Ministry of tourism and UNDP use different methods for development action tourist plans in National park Durmitor including following issues:
-Strategic ecological estimation of Durmitor as destination for tourism in nature (analysis of capacities of current tourist infrastructure; analysis of financial mechanisms for development of tourism, protection and care of nature; public/private partnership; development of private sector).
Emitting market and distributive channels for tourism in nature (description of current trends in tourism in nature; identifying aim market including ecotourism, adventure travels, scientific/academic/volunteering/educational (SAVE) aspect etc.; identifying attractive distributive channels to Montenegro as well as European and other potential emitting markets).
Development of tourist product (synthesis and presentation of existing researches on sustainable product in domain of tourism in nature; setting potential tourist routes for tourism in nature during all four seasons, including connections to coast and roads to neighboring regions; estimate of possibility concerning development of accommodation capacities, for example eco bungalows, eco villages, agro tourism and cabins; estimate of strategic approach in creating brand and positioning that use travel and marketing organizations at destinations chosen for tourism in nature, better tourist valorization and promotion of untouched nature).
Montenegro, that has almost 50 years of history in tourism, is now in the process of repositioning, modernizing and diversifying its tourist product and services aiming to set its destinations as high quality and strongly recognizable brand. Creating quality, multi dimensional tourist offer is of great importance for improvement of competitive position of Montenegro in respect to other Mediterranean destinations oriented to offering of high quality offer. Recent report of World council for tourism and traveling clearly showed that in space of Montenegrin economy tourist sector is mover of long term economic growth and prosperity, to which contribute adequate geographic position and insuperable nature.
After finishing of practicum, consulting team of University of George Washington and representatives from Montenegro will announce their findings and recommendations to Ministry of tourism, UNDP, representatives of the Government, University of Montenegro, private sector and media. Presentation will take place at Zabljak and after at Podgorica on June 23, at Hotel Crna Gora.
Also consulting team will give recommendations for at least three sustainable tourist projects focusing to tourist product in nature and cultural resources of region of NP Durmitor. These initial projects that will offer to consideration will include eco bungalows, eco villages, agro tourism, cabins and other sustainable options.
Ministry of tourism and UNDP will development of these suggested projects for region of Durmitor use for promotion of sustainable tourism as mechanism to creating balanced economic, ecological and social benefit for tourists and local population.
