Ulcinj – Ancient fortress which has resisted the powerful armada of Jingis Khan, which was the shelter of fearless pirates of which everyone was afraid, and a place where cuffed Servantes found Don Kihot’s Dulcinea, and Sbataj Cevi spent his last days of life is still on the margin of tourist events in the southernmost Montenegrin municipality.
Cultural events such as summer scene and paint exhibition, a hotel, and several restaurants can hardly please thousands of tourists who come to Ulcinj’s Old town wishing to “steal” at least a part of its tumultuous past and its rich tradition. President of NGO Kaljaja Ismet Karamanga who lives in the Old town claims that his citizens would want their ancient bulwarks to be like the ones in Kotor and in Budva.
– Even though Ulcinj fortress is specific and unique in the netire Mediterranean we would want it to have contents like the ones in Budva or in Kotor. I think that authentic shops with souvenirs and products handmade which could not be bought anywhere else in the town would be a bull’s eye. Of course the mass arrival of tourists would do its share, the competition in all businesses would come to its peak and all of that would raise the price and the reputation of the Old town, would brought European standards and would implement necessary order inside the ancient bulwarks. I believe that that would be the determining step for so much wanted membership in UNESCO says Karamanga confirming in that way the thesis that every new story about Ulcinj town begins and ends with UNESCO. Namely membership in the prestigious world organization, which deals with preservation of cultural heritage for along time, has been a priority of local people and of Kaljaja. Karamanga said that Municipality and the state should encourage the citizens of the Old town with favorable credits for adaptation and additional building in accordance with the Republic bureau for protection of monuments of culture.
According to his words we have good currents in the Old town now.
Bulwarks have been cleaned, old dumps have been removed and the public light has been renewed. We still have a problem of driving away the garbage but I believe that soon city administration will solve that problem – said Karmanga criticizing the way in which the summer scene is being organized.
A few exhibitions, a play, or a concert are still a great opportunity for escape from huge decibels of turbo folk from the Pier – claims Karamanga.
