On the southern side of the Old Town Budva, at the most elevated place, the town fortress Citadel was built from which city walls begin and end. The fortress is first mentioned in XV century. During the upgrading and reconstruction of the fortress in the XIX century, the small church of Santa Maria de Castelo was demolished and a military garrison was placed in the fortress.
The citadel was for a long time owned by the state, and for a time it was used as a stage for the “Theater City Budva”. It is now privately owned with museum and catering facilities.
