Tivat – Leaving of two rocket boats “Osa1” 15 days ago from Tivat to Alexandria confirmed the fact that former powerful fleet of YWN which Montenegro inherited, slowly but inexorably is disappearing.
Five of those ships were sold to the Egyptians two years ago by the Ministry of defense of the former Serbia and Montenegro.
“Vijesti” in September last year wrote about the new concept of organization of NM in a unit called Navy Base, and which in its structure will not have a rocket, torpedo, and mine weapons. Such a concept was confirmed few days ago by the minister of defense, Boro Vucinic who said that the Navy Base will have at their disposal “ships for surveillance of the sea”. Translated into a factual state, the plans was to keep only the frigate 34 from the totally 4 frigates of the Navy of Montenegro, as well as gunboats 405 and 406 type “Rade Koncar”. Frigate 33, “Kotor” few months ago was taken out from the operative use, and it joined frigates 31 and 32 Russian type “koni” which for a long time are found in the hangars in the Arsenal. Similar situation was with the gunboats from which 406 at the end of last year was repaired in Arsenal, and 401, 404, and 405 for a long time are immovable, and are lying on a knot in Bar Harbor. If Montenegro decides to procure Italian used rocket corvettes “Minerva” then in the meantime they should dispose “the extras of the boats that can’t be used and of the weapons”. In that case the current NM in the next few months would melt as the snow in the sun – the existing ships will be sold in direct arrangements with foreign countries, through auction and immediate deals, and the things that stay unsold will end up in high furnaces of Niksic forgery as old iron.
Four rocket gunboats type “Rade Koncar” could be sold to Egypt or Libya, and those two north African countries will most likely be the new owners of rocket frigates 31 “Split” and 32 “Koper”, type “koni” (Libya), that is of small submarines , type P 911, and an invasion ship mine thrower “Silba” DBM – 241 (Egypt). The Egyptians have shown the interest for two big diesel – electrical submarines, type “Sava” P – 831, so some advisers and consultants in the similar trades have already contacted the experts of the Ship institute in Zagreb where those submarines were projected, that is BSO (Shipbuilding industry of special objects) in Split where they were made, with a goal to allow the potential buyer, to repair and modernize P-831 and P-832 after the purchase, because Tivat’s Arsenal in a few months will be given over to Canadian Peter Munk. Egyptians would like to take immediately also two out of five small submarines, type P-911, but the Montenegrin Government is trying to sell to them all five ships of that type.
According to unofficial information close to the ruling circles in the Navy, in one of the projects of sale of war ships of navy of Montenegro to foreign countries, Croatia and Montenegro could join, because the War Navy of Indonesia is very interested to by the rocket frigates 33 “Kotor” and 34 “Pula” but before the handing over to the new owner they would have to be generally repaired in the Croatian shipbuilding yard Kraljevica which made those ships at the end of 80’s.
Oil tanker PN-26 “Lignja”, the old water carrier PV – 17 “Alga”, and invasion raft – dredge PDS – 705 have already been offered for sale, and soon the buyers will be offered with the aid transport ship PO – 91 “Ugor”, tanker PN – 27 “Sipa”, small tugboat LR – 72, while the big tugboat PR – 38 “Tunj” will most likely soon be taken over by the Management of the maritime security of Montenegro it is possible that in a later phase, because of the security of the system for rescuing at the sea and civil hydrographic service, civil maritime authorities will take over from NM a big tugboat PR – 41 “Orada”, sailing crane LDI – 18, and a hydrographic boat BH – 12, so in the end the arrival of two corvettes, type “Minerva”, from Italy, in the structure of NM will only await the 74 years old veteran – a school boat, sail boat “Jadran”.
MINERVAS ARE COMING FROM ITALY?
The newest idea is that three boats which were planed to be left in the structure of the Nay base will be offered for sale because Montenegro at relatively favorable conditions should get two sailing Italian rocket corvettes, type “Minerva”, from WN of Italy. We are talking about the ships whose displacement is 1.285 tones per each boat, which in the end of the 80’s of the last century were built for the coastal defense and patrolling over the open sea.
Two “minervas” will most probably, in accordance with the Montenegrin policy of “not carrying of the rocker, torpedo, and mine weapons”, arrive without its rocket AAD system “Aspide” and without its anti submarine torpedo of caliber 324mm, but on a fairly rough south Adriatic and Straight of Otranto even like that they would be more favorable solution for an effective patrol service that it is the case with the to much smaller and with a different concept rocket gunboats, type “Rade Koncar”, with the displacement of solely 250 tones.
