Tivat – School boat of War navy of Italy, sailboat Amerigo Vespucci A – 5312 has sailed in Kotor Harbor yesterday where it will stay in a three-day official visit to Montenegro.
That three-mast sailboat is one of the biggest and the most beautiful boats of that type in the world. Amerigo Vespucci which is commanded by captain of the battle ship Massimo Vijanelo is on its regular summer cruising with freshmen of Maritime academy WN of Italy from Livorno.
During the three days of staying in Boka young Italian maritime officers and corporal will visit Kotor and cultural historical monuments of that area, and they will have several sport competitions with their colleagues from Navy of Montenegro.
Amerigo Vespucci was also in Kotor in November 2004.
Even though it is not a battle ship Amerigo Vespucci is pride of Italian WN whose part it became in 1931 when it was built in shipbuilding yard Castelmare di Stabija. Italian sailboat has three masts of which the biggest one is 54 meters high, and it has 24 sails of total surface of more than 2.300 square meters.
Its metal trunk is 101 meters long, 15, 5 meters wide, with the draft of 7, 3 meters. Amerugo Vespucci has displacement of 4,146 tones.
Beside the standard drive unit on sails the ship has two diesel engines and two electrical engines of total power of 3.000 kW with which it achieves the speed of 10 knots.
It is served by the crew of 16 officers and 72 corporals and about 190 sailors along with which during the summer months there are 170 freshmen of the first year of Maritime academy from Livorno for whom Amerigo Vespucci is a kind of practice school under the sails.
Mayor of Kotor Marija Catovic has received the captain of a battle ship Vijanelo, the Italian attaché in Montenegro general Lucca Bata and charge d’affairs of Italian embassy in Podgorica Guido Roteli in the Municipality building. The reception among others attended the head of the headquarters of the Navy of Montenegro, captain of a battle ship Zeljko Hercegovac, director of Kotor Harbor Ljubo Radovic, and harbor captain Nikola Drakulovic.
Reminding them on extremely close and strong historical relations of Kotor and Boka with Venetian republic mayor Catovic said that Amerigo Vespucci with its appearance reminds on numerous sailboats from glorious and rich Boka maritime past.
– Town of Kotor and Venetia are brother towns, and you know that Venetian Republic was present in Boka for more than 400 years and has left significant marks, especially in Kotor and Perast. I hope that your arrival and the arrival of our other friends is an announcement of even more fruitful cooperation with Italy – said Catovic.
THRILLED WITH THE BEAUTY OF BOKA
Thanks to the hospitality which was shown to Vespucci and its crew Roteli said that Kotor has a rich history of relations with Italian areas, since the Antique Rome, and that people from Perast were guards of Venetian war flag and the ruler himself.
Amerigo Vespucci came back to Kotor because during the last visit when we were here in November 2004 we had a great reception and hospitality. While we were sailing in this morning in Boka we were impressed with the beauty of this area. For me, and I come from Venice, it means a lot that this town and this area have so close relations and good cooperation with Venice – stressed Vijanelo.
He and his officers last night have thrown a reception on the deck of Vespucci for the highest Montenegrin civil and military officials.
VISIT OF CITIZENS
Citizens of Kotor from 10:00 until 12:30 a.m. and from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. will have the opportunity to visit the sailboat Amerigo Vespucci. That boat will be available for visit also tomorrow from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m.
CROWDED IN THE HARBOR
Kotor bay was a beautiful sight for visitors yesterday – aquatorium in front of the bulwarks of the ancient town was full of ships, and several of them couldn’t find a place to be tied on the pier.
At the same time there were three big traveling ships in Kotor – cruisers which are crusing over the Adriatic and Mediterranean with which almost 1.000 passengers came to Boka. All three ships left Boka at the end of the day and went to some new destinations, to Greece, Corfu and Pirej.
Among many big yachts, 80 meters long yacht Constellation stood put which sails under the flag of Qatar. That super luxurious boat for pleasure belongs to Qatar emir, Sheik Hamad bin Kalifa al Tani, and it has already been in Montenegrin waters some 20 days ago when it was refueling its tanks in Bar Harbor.
The coast of Kotor Harbor yesterday was decorated with mega yacht New Sunrise, 62 meters long which belongs to famous British businessman of Israeli origin Sami Ofer the owner of ship company Zodiac and the co-owner of Tanker Pacific.
