Kanli Kula Fortress
Kanli Kula Fortress, whose name means “bloody tower” in Turkish, dominates Herceg Novi’s old town from its 85-meter-high perch. This complex fortification system, first mentioned in the 17th century, took its final shape under Turkish rule and was later remodeled by Venetians. Consequently, it now serves primarily as a summer stage.
History and Significance of Kanli Kula Fortress
The name Kanli Kula Fortress itself is of Turkish origin, meaning “bloody tower.” It is situated in the north part of the old town in Herceg Novi. With its size and position, the tower dominates over the town, standing 85 meters above sea level. Kanli Kula Fortress was in fact a complex fortification system. In written documents, it is mentioned for the first time in the 17th century. Over time, it suffered significant changes and destructions, so the exact time of its construction cannot be determined precisely. The final shape the tower got during the time of Turkish reign, while the Venetians, immediately after taking over Herceg Novi, made some remodeling. Today, Kanli Kula Fortress is mostly used as a summer stage.
