Niksic

Nikšić is Montenegro’s second-largest city by population (72,443) and its largest municipality, covering 15% of the country’s area. Located in north-central Montenegro at 630 m above sea level, it boasts excellent transport links and proximity to key tourist spots like the Adriatic Coast and Žabljak ski resort.

History and Urban Landscape

The city has a rich tradition and culture, having been repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt throughout history, which changed its name and appearance. Consequently, its center features a beautiful town square built in 1885 at King Nikola’s request, with wide streets, boulevards, and green areas.

Natural and Cultural Attractions

Nikšić is famous for its “sea”—the artificial Lake Krupac, a favorite local spot. Moreover, the establishment of Lake Fest boosted the popularity of Bedem Fest, held at the Ottoman fortress Bedem, attracting tourists with rock and alternative music.

This music scene contributes to Nikšić‘s nickname as “the city of beer, steel, and RnR.” Indeed, the city was an industrial center in ex-Yugoslavia, home to major steel production and Nikšićko Pivo, a renowned Montenegrin beer.

Seasonal Activities

Nikšić offers sunny summers and snowy winters. In summer, you can swim in six lakes, hike marked trails, bike around the city, and visit beautiful places. In winter, enjoy skiing, snowboarding, and sledging in Vučje’s winter wonderland.
