Monastery Dajbabe

Monastery Dajbabe is a unique cave monastery near Podgorica, Montenegro, founded in 1897 and dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God, offering a blend of natural and human artistry in its cross-shaped design.


Location and Setting

Not far from Podgorica, on the way towards Bar, there is Monastery Dajbabe. It is located below Dajbaba hill, which dominantly raises above Zeta valley. This setting provides a scenic backdrop for visitors exploring Montenegro.

History and Architecture

Monastery Dajbabe is dedicated to Uspenje Bogorodice (Falling into sleep of Holy Mother of God) and got its name from the village. It was founded in 1897. Initially, only the cave space was used for the church, but it was later expanded into a cross-shaped design with chapels.

The only visible part outside the cave is a spacious entrance porch with two belfries. Moreover, the protector monk Simeon Popovic painted the interior, adjusting pictures to the natural rock shapes. This artistic touch enhances the spiritual atmosphere of the monastery.
